Meeting started at: 7:00 p.m.
Ken Freese led council members and attendees in the pledge of allegiance.
Roll call was conducted by John Wyatt.
Edith Vance and Sharon Cordy were absent. All other council members were present.
Mary Kralovec served as acting secretary for the April 5, 2007 meeting.
Carol Yokum made a motion to waive the reading of the March 1, 2007 minutes. Faye Miller seconded the motion. The minutes will be posted at the Pima County Library in Ajo, Arizona.
Ken Freese read the Treasurers report. Since March 1, 2007, bill $26.32 was paid to the Ajo Copper News. This leaves a balance of $1385.68.
Sharon Bronson was not able to stay for the evening's meeting.
Russell Wise from Pima County Flood Control was introduced by Lil Jones. Russell presented an update flood plane installation.
Russell Wise spoke about the flood plane installation at the Curley School ball field. They are currently working on getting all the permits needed to for construction. The notice for bids should come out by mid-June and contractor selected and Notice to Proceed with construction completed by mid-September. Discussion followed.
Lieutenant Bill Clements from the Pima County Sheriff's Department was introduced by Mary Kralovec. Lieutenant Clements described the district they cover with 14 deputies. There was also a dedication of the CERT trailer on April 5, 2007 at the Ajo/Gibson Volunteer Fire Department. Spring break accidents did not include any fatalities. Pima County has received special federal funding to work with the United States Border Patrol on immigrant and drug enforcement. Discussion followed.
John Wyatt reported on the WPCCC visit to on 03/14/07 to State of Arizona legislators Manny Alvarez and Jennifer Burns. WPCCC board members informed Manny Alvarez about the proposed hazardous waste dump in neighboring Sonora. Representative Alvarez appreciated the information and indicated he would follow up on this subject with Governor of Sonora with whom he would be meeting with later in the month. Representative Jennifer Burns was also interested in any information on the proposed hazardous waste dump in Sonora, Mexico. Both Representatives encouraged the public to e-mail them with concerns or comments.
NEW BUSINESS:
Lil Jones reported the WPCCC board had received a press release from Sharon Bronson indicating the Ajo Landfill will remain free to the public. A copy of the press release is attached hereto.
The new roof at the Ajo Community Golf Course will be dedicated on April 20, 2007 at 2:00 p.m.
There will be a dedication and grand opening of the Curley School in May, 2007.
Call to the Floor:
Robert Moreno spoke about pedestrian safety in Ajo. WPCCC received a letter from Pima County Department of Transportation, dated March 5, 2007, stating the crosswalks within the plaza would be repainted within the next 30 days. To date, this has not happened and the WPCCC board will be sending the Pima County Department of Transportation a follow up letter. The WPCCC board has received no response from the Arizona Department of Transportation.
Sharon Bargabos expressed concern about a mechanic's shop at the corner of Lomita and Guest House Road and asked the Council to assist the neighborhood in having this shop removed. Discussion followed. Debbie Morrow referred Mrs. Bargabos to the Pima County website to submit an on-line zoning compliant form. Faye Miller indicated there will be a list of Pima County telephone numbers in the Ajo Copper News which indicate where to call for various issues and complaints. Mr. Don Peterson spoke from the floor concerning the difficulty in locating property in Ajo which was zoned for industrial use. Chris Dimitrakopoulous agreed to act as a liaison between Mr. Peterson, the Chamber of Commerce, and the WPCCC board.
A motion was made by Carol Yokum to write a letter from the WPCCC board to Pima County zoning explaining our concern about the operation of a mechanic business in a residential neighborhood. Mary Kralovec seconded the motion, all in favor.
Faye Miller made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Debbie Morrow seconded the motion. All in favor, the meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
