The meeting was called to order by Chairman Lil Jones. Ken Freese led the Pledge of Allegiance. The roll was called by Faye Miller. Present were: Lil Jones, Ken Freese, Carol Yokum, Deb Morrow, Chris Dimitrakopoulous, Faye Miller and John Wyatt. The minutes of the last meeting were accepted and will be available at the Library and on the web site. The Treasurer’s Report was given by Ken Freese. The only expenditures have been for advertising and for post office box rental.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
Deb Morrow reported that the recycling trailer for aluminum cans was available in the parking lot at Olsen’s IGA Market. Cardboard can also be left for pickup at Olsen’s.
Deb also reported on the web site now available to the public. Tom Powell made a request for additional photos of the area that will be posted on the site. Photos should be sent to Deb Morrow at the e-mail address furnished on the site.
NEW BUSINESS:
It was announced that the new telephone book being published by Ajo Copper News is available and can be picked up at the newspaper office.
SPEAKERS:
Four representatives of Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold spoke to the group about the current construction project and plans for the future. They displayed a map showing how the areas would be serviced. Richard Ducote, Regional Communications Manager for Southern Arizona, was the main speaker. Also present were Jack Peterson, Project Manager; Ray Romero, Site Manager; and Frank Nides, Maintenance Supervisor. The electrical, water and sewer lines in the older area of town will eventually be replaced. They were complimented on the speed and courtesy displayed by their workers. Questionnaires from two individuals concerning problems were received and forwarded to Freeport-McMoran.
Gloria Soto from Pima County Community Development Block Grant program advised that the granting session for the coming year is coming up. Grant requests must be into the Tucson office by February 7, 2008. She also informed the audience of the availability of grant funds for repair to individual homes of lower income residents. Mimi Phillips of ISDA announced the availability of Pro-Neighborhood grants. These are small grants to small groups aimed at improving the local community. Individuals interested in applying for these grants should contact Ms. Phillips at the ISDA office.
Bennett Bernal of Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation spoke concerning the Skateboard Park. Work will begin shortly and the Park should be open by January 16, 2008.
Deb Miller of Supervisor Bronson’s office greeted us on behalf of Supervisor Bronson. She passed out magnets with county telephone numbers.
Lt. Clements from the Sheriff’s Department was the next speaker followed by Alex Harper from Border Patrol.
Ben Cooper, incoming President of the Ajo Garden Club, presented the landscaping award for businesses to ADOT. It was accepted by Greg Gentsh, Project Engineer. In addition he thanked Connie Skousen and June Nickell for their work on obtaining the grant moneys for this project.
Lt. Clements from the Sheriff’s Department was the next speaker followed by Alex Harper from Border Patrol.
CALL TO THE FLOOR:
Frank Harris had requested time to address the problem of helicopters flying at a low altitude over homes in the Why area. He was able to speak directly with Alex Haley concerning this problem and resolve the situation.
June Nickell questioned the condition of Well Road. She will pursue this and if she wants any assistance she will advise the Board.
Jim Snyder spoke in appreciation of the pruning of the trees along Solano.
Mimi Phillips reminded the audience of the Smithsonian Exhibit presently on show at the Curley School and left brochures outlining the schedule.
ELECTION RESULTS:
The election of Carol Yokum as District 4 representative, Ernie Green as At Large District 8 and John Wyatt as At Large District 10 were announced. Vacancies still exist and interested individuals were requested to apply.
There being no further business to come before the Council at this time, the meeting was adjourned.
