Minutes of the Meeting
May 2, 2008

Meeting was called to order by Chairperson Lil Jones at 7:PM.

Pledge of Allegiance was led by Ken Freese.

Roll Call was taken by Faye Miller. Lil Jones, Ken Freese, Deb Morrow, Chris Dimitrakopoulous, John Wyatt, Ernest Green, Carol Yokum, and Faye Miller.

Minutes were accepted as corrected by the Council and are available at the Library and on the website at www.WPCCC.inf.

Treasurer report was given by Ken Freese. Present balance is $1,104.68.

UNFINISHED BUISINES:

1. Recycling up date: Deb Morrow reports that twenty 24 gallon blue/labeled containers will be placed around town to encourage people to recycle. Two 40 yard containers will soon be placed next to the tire bin at the land fill for metals. The containment area has containers for metal and glass beverage bottles. The area is open Saturdays from 9:00 to 12: Noon.

2. Soil sampling: John Wyatt reminds all to call to be included in the soil sampling study. It is free. Dates and phone numbers are in the latest Copper News.

3. Retention pond: Bud Klinefelter noted the retention pond is complete and has been accepted by the County from the contractors.

4. Voting: Carol Yokum encourages all to be registered and to vote. Forms are available and will be available at the Cinco de Mayo both.

SPEAKERS:

1. Ernest Green introduces Dr. Louis Albert, President, Pima County Community College, West Campus. Discussed feedback from his previous visit. Noted the request for assistance in administering GED testing. Introduced members of the Campus Assessment Center who are here for two days to administer the GED test to 16 students and adults. A speakers bureau is in process to offer free lectures, demonstrations, performances and educational experiences. Noted the Curley School Auditorium and staging opportunities for offering college performing arts productions. Also a partnership with the college arts department and the Ajo arts community. Noted the Metropolitan Education Commission that sponsors programs for college access Information. This is a service to the school and general public. Albert noted his commitment to the success of partnering the college and the community.

2. Faye Miller introduced Alex Harper, Border Patrol report. Be aware of “bails” of marijuana. It is not uncommon to find one as this is a major traffic area. Noted the statistics of apprehensions: Daily averages 74, weekly is 2234, since October 1 is 10,863.

Three things that are needed most: personnel, training, and technology. Noted new training center, physical training area. The “paint ball story is just that. They use pepper spray. The technology of the 67 miles of fence discussed. Boeing spent 100,000,000 dollars on the fence. There is now 25 million dollars in equipment and technology remaining. Next step is refinement, planed to be complete by November. Noted dangers and challenges in comprehending illegals and coyotes.

3. Alex Harper: Regarding Fire Department: There is still talk of a fulltime fire station. It will cost a great deal in taxes, etc.. Would lower fire insurance costs most likely. Recharging fire extinguishers must be done by private sources. Check the phone books.

It was noted this is a volunteer fire department. Donations are slow coming in. The department needs your help. Donate,

4. John Wyatt introduced Lt. Clements: Two officers will be leaving and two new officers will be arriving later this month. Eight new officers will be added by October bringing the staff to 19. More suitable four-wheel-drive vehicles will be replacing the Crown Victoria vehicles. The “are you there” telephone program was noted with appreciation.

5. Lil Jones called upon Principal Fred Fout for comments. Many year end activities were noted. The Senior class has raised the funds for the trip to Washington, D.C.. So successful they are adding Gettysburg. Community support and involvement noted.

As there was no further business from the floor, on the motion of Faye Miller, seconded by Deb Miller, Chair Lil Jones adjourned the meeting at 7:55 PM.
