Ken Freese led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The roll was called by Jimmie Lou Guzman and it was determined that a quorum was present.

The Chairman announced that the minutes of the last meeting had been approved by the Council and they were available in the library or at the website, WPCCC.info.

OLD BUSINESS:

  1. There was no unfinished business.

SPEAKERS:

  1. Lt. Clements of the Sheriff's office was the first speaker introduced by Ken Freese. He reported that three new SAVs had graduated making a total of 13 with ¾s of them being here full time. There have been no serious incidents during spring break. There were no questions.

There was a question concerning street lights and the Chairman advised that a project was underway to replace the lights in the area within the townsite served by APS. Lt. Clements reported that additional deputies would be sent to Ajo and they would do more patrolling.

  2. Deb Miller, assistant to Sharon Bronson, was introduced by Debbie Morrow. She presented the proposal to add fees to the landfill. Supervisor Bronson is opposed to imposing fees at the Ajo Landfill. There will be a meeting of the Supervisors and she will try to get the support of the other supervisors to oppose the increase for Ajo's landfill. There was a lot of discussion on this subject. Deb Miller will keep in touch with the community. The meeting is scheduled for next week (this date was later changed to May 5). Ms. Miller asked for a show of hands of those opposed to the imposing of a fee and all those in attendance (approximately 50) raised their hands. A show of hands for those wanting the same hours was then asked for but Patti Bush explained why the hours were different. They are changed to accommodate Rubbage Control so they can make their dumps in a timely fashion. Rubbage Control pays a fee for each one of its customers.

Deb Miller left applications for summer employement for youth.

There was a brief discussion on the increase in property taxes in Ajo.

  3. Vanessa Heins talked about the Pima County Victim Witness Program. Norma Gomez has been hired to work in the Ajo area. There will soon be training programs for volunteer advocates to work with victims and those interested are encouraged to attend.

  4. Margaret Kish, and three associates from Pima County with the Pima County Community Development and Neighborhood Conservation Department talked about funding opportunities for Ajo including the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. Cathy Hutton, President of the Board for the International Sonoran Desert Alliance discussed ISDA's involvement with the program. Jim Wilcox was introduced as the local contact for the stabilization program and he distributed questionaires for individuals to fill out and return to ISDA indicating buildings that they felt needed "stabilization." It is not sure exactly how much money will be available for this program, but it will not be a great amount.

  5. Fran Driver spoke on the First Things First Program. This is a program designed to help children from birth to five years of age. Marilee Williams reported on her attempts to develop a non-profit child care program here in Ajo.
